Technology

Our focus since day one has been on productivity and cost reductions in manufacturing. We achieve this by processing a large number of smaller substrates in a highly automated, all-vacuum process. All materials are deposited by sputtering and no Cadmium is used in our cells.

We use stainless steel substrates that are rigid enough to be used in an automated module manufacturing line, but still flexible enough to allow for novel module manufacturing concepts. The substrates are cost effective and they do not break in transportation and downstream processing.

We do not scribe the cells. The voltage is achieved by stringing the cells together in the module, just like with conventional silicon cells. This leads to a higher yield and fewer rejects compared with monolithic thin film products.

One Midsummer manufacturing line can process up to 360 cells per hour. When you need more capacity you add additional identical lines. This allows for an incremental ramp up and a low cost to get started.

Midsummer’s R&D is carried out on the same equipment and with the same substrate size that is being used for production. This ensures proven production solutions and smooth transfer of new processes. Unlike with large turn-key lines, Midsummer will always have an identical production line running in our R&D and production facility.
